What Plumelore Is, and Why We Built It
Plumelore is a backyard birding resource built for people who actually feed birds, not just people who think about it. If you have a feeder on your deck, a bird bath in your garden, or hummingbirds showing up every summer and you want to do right by them, this site is for you.
The tagline says it plainly: “Backyard birding, honestly tested.” That word “honestly” is doing real work. The backyard birding niche has a lot of content written by people who have clearly never set up a feeder, never fought a squirrel for sunflower seeds, and never wondered why their heated bird bath stopped working in January. We try to be different. Our guides are built from a combination of hands-on familiarity with products, careful reading of verified owner reviews across retail platforms and enthusiast communities, manufacturer specifications, and the collective wisdom of birding forums where hobbyists share brutally honest feedback after months of real use.
We do not take money to recommend products, and affiliate commissions do not change which products earn a spot in our guides. If something earns a top pick, it is because the evidence supports it. For full details, read our affiliate disclosure.
The Team
Plumelore is run by a small editorial team of birding enthusiasts. We are not ornithologists with university credentials, and we do not pretend to be. We are people who spend real time around feeders and bird baths, who read the research, and who think carefully about what information actually helps a backyard birder make a good decision. That combination, focused curiosity plus editorial discipline, is what goes into every guide.
What We Cover
Our content is organized into four areas, each built around the questions birders ask most.
Hummingbirds
Feeders, nectar ratios, timing, and everything else that determines whether hummingbirds show up and stay. See our hummingbird guides.
Backyard Birds
Feeders for every species and situation, from window feeders to squirrel-proof setups, plus the poles and baffles that hold it all together. Browse our backyard bird guides.
Bird Baths
Standard baths, heated baths for winter, placement tips, and what actually keeps water clean. Explore our bird bath guides.
Seed and Suet
Which seeds attract which birds, how to minimize waste, and which suet feeders hold up in real weather. Check out our seed and suet guides.
How We Make Recommendations
Every buying guide on Plumelore follows the same process. We research the product category thoroughly, map the options against what birders consistently report in owner reviews, cross-reference with manufacturer specs, and apply our own judgment about what matters most for backyard use. Where owner consensus is split, we say so. Where a budget option genuinely outperforms a premium one, we say that too.
We use affiliate links to keep the site funded. Those links cost you nothing extra and are placed only on products we would feel comfortable recommending to a friend. You can read more about how that works in our affiliate disclosure.
