Squirrels are not stupid, and every feeder design assumes they are. A grey squirrel can jump roughly four feet straight up, eight to ten feet horizontally, and can climb anything a squirrel body can wrap around, which includes most poles, chains, and the tree your feeder hangs from. It can hang by its back feet, reach down another foot, and it solves mechanical problems, like lifting spring-loaded perch covers, within a few days of first attempt. When people say a feeder is “squirrel proof,” what they usually mean is “squirrel proof for about a week.” The ones that hold up longer work by physics, not by cleverness, and this guide is about stacking the physics in your favor.

## First, understand the actual threat model

A squirrel does not eat much at a sitting, maybe an ounce. The damage is different: squirrels do not feed at a feeder, they raid it. They empty the seed onto the ground, chew through plastic ports, bend tube mechanisms, and once a feeder is knocked down, the seed on the ground attracts rats within days. The problem to solve is not “squirrels eat seed.” It is “squirrels destroy the feeding station and spill enough seed to create a second problem.” That reframing matters because it changes what counts as a win. A feeder that squirrels occasionally sample but cannot empty or damage is a solved feeder, even if you lose a handful of seed a week.

## The distance rules that actually work

Every placement guide quotes the numbers, so here they are precisely, because they are the whole game. Hang or mount the feeder at least five feet off the ground, at least eight feet away from the nearest jump-off point (branch, fence, roofline, railing), and at least ten feet from trees if you have a squirrel that has learned long jumps. If you cannot satisfy those three distances, no baffle will save you, because a baffle only protects the route it is mounted on. The most common real-world failure we see is a feeder hung on a shepherd’s hook two feet from a fence. The squirrel never touches the hook. It launches from the fence. Before buying anything, walk your yard and identify every launch point within ten feet. That walk is worth more than any product.

## Baffles, ranked by what actually stops them

**Torpedo or cylinder baffles on poles**, mounted with the top of the baffle at least five feet up, are the most reliable mechanical solution. A squirrel climbing up the pole hits the baffle’s underside and cannot get around it because there is nothing to grip. The failure mode is always installation: mounted too low, or the pole is within jumping distance of something, so the squirrel never climbs the pole at all. Diameter matters, bigger is better, 15 inches or more defeats most reach-arounds.

**Bowl or dome baffles above hanging feeders** work on chains and hooks. The squirrel descending the chain hits the dome and cannot grip past it. The failure mode is the swing: if the feeder hangs loose enough that a squirrel can swing it toward a branch, the baffle stops protecting anything.

**Weight-activated feeders** close the seed ports when something heavier than a bird lands. They work, and they are the best option when placement distances are impossible, but calibrate them. Most ship set to close at around 4 ounces, which suits songbirds fine, but a squirrel learns to hang from one back foot and distribute weight below the threshold. If your weight-closing feeder is being beaten, raise the closing threshold sensitivity rather than assuming the mechanism is broken.

**Cages around tube feeders** are simple and effective for small birds, and the tradeoff is species selection: a cage with two-inch spacing admits chickadees, finches, and titmice, and excludes cardinals, woodpeckers, and grosbeaks. If your yard’s cast includes the big birds, a cage is a trade, not a fix.

## Seed choices that reduce the payoff

Even a defeated squirrel raids less when the payoff is poor. Straight safflower is the classic example: squirrels and most grackles find it bitter and skip it, while cardinals and house finches eat it readily. Nyjer thistle is a second: squirrels essentially ignore nyjer, though so do most squirrels’ rivals, and nyjer has its own spoilage issues in humid weather. ## Hot pepper, honestly

Capsaicin-treated seed works on mammals and not on birds, because birds lack the receptor. It genuinely reduces squirrel interest. The honest caveats: it washes off in rain unless the seed is oil-coated, it is messy to handle, and it does nothing to stop the structural raiding, a squirrel that cannot eat the seed it spills will still spill it. Treat hot pepper as a reducer, not a barrier.

## The maintenance habits that quietly matter

Clean up spilled seed every few days rather than weekly. Move feeders seasonally, because in autumn squirrels cache seed aggressively and their motivation roughly triples, which is also when people declare a previously working setup “suddenly broken.” And re-walk the launch-point survey after any storm or pruning, since a new gap or a fallen branch changes the geometry of what is reachable.

## A realistic expectation

A five-foot pole with a torpedo baffle, ten feet from any launch point, loaded with safflower or a quality no-waste blend, will cost you almost nothing to squirrels.
