On a pole, the stovepipe baffle wins. The standard recipe is a section of 6-inch diameter stovepipe extended to 24 inches long, and Cornell Lab recommends mounting it so the top sits 5 feet off the ground with the feeder above it. Squirrels can jump about 4 feet vertically, and a cylinder they cannot grip does the rest.
Domes and cones work too, on the right hardware, which is where most baffles actually fail.
Cone versus dome versus stovepipe
| Baffle type | Typical size (manufacturer specs) | Best mounting | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stovepipe cylinder | 6 in diameter, 24 in long | Pole, top at 5 ft | Needs a straight pole section |
| Torpedo dome | About 6 in across | Shepherd hook or thin pole | Wide posts defeat the overhang |
| Wraparound cone | About 15 in across | 4×4 wooden post | Undersized cones get climbed around |
Diameter is the whole game. A 6-inch torpedo dome hangs far enough out on a thin shepherd hook that a squirrel’s reach ends in air, and the same logic applies to hanging setups, which our hanging feeder placement guide walks through.

Why a cone needs 15 inches on a post
A squirrel hanging by its hind legs can extend roughly half its body length past an edge, tail excluded. Cornell Lab pegs the working overhang at 15 inches for wraparound cones mounted on a square wooden post, and smaller cones on the same posts routinely get defeated. The animal simply reaches around the rim. On a thin pole the physics reverse: 6 inches of dome outmuscles the reach because there is nothing to brace against, one of the details our poles and baffles roundup tracks by mounting type.
The launch pad failure
Mount a baffle too close under the feeder and it stops being a barrier. A squirrel jumps to the baffle’s outer rim, and the rim becomes a second launching point closer to the seed. The fix is spacing: keep the feeder high enough above the baffle that the rim jump still ends short. Pole height, baffle height, and overhanging branches have to work as one system, which is the sequence in our feeder pole setup guide.
What no baffle fixes
Overhanging branches. Squirrels drop about 10 feet from above with accuracy, so a perfect pole under a maple limb still feeds the neighborhood. If the flight path from above is open, start with the broader fixes in our squirrel proofing guide before spending money on steel.
