Hummingbird bird bath mister: ruby-throated hummingbird hovering in a fine garden spray

Hummingbirds bathe by flying through fine spray and rubbing against wet leaves, so a hummingbird bird bath works best as a mister or dripper, not a bowl. A deep basin looks like a bath to you and like a hazard to a bird that weighs a few grams.

Here is what to buy, how shallow is shallow, and where to put it.

How hummingbirds actually use water

Perky-Pet’s guide says hummingbirds do not typically drink from backyard water sources, because nectar covers their fluid needs. They come for bathing, preening and cooling off, and they get sticky from pollen and stray nectar.

The same guide lists misters, drippers, weeping-style fountains and landscape sprinklers on a fine setting as the right tools. It also says a typical bird bath is far too deep for them.

How shallow does the water need to be

Cornell’s All About Birds sets a general bird bath at no more than 1 inch at the edges, sloping to 2 inches in the middle. That is for songbirds. For hummingbirds, guidance cited by Water Fountain Online from Texas Parks and Wildlife is to arrange rocks so some spots hold less than a quarter inch.

If you already own a deep bowl, fill it with flat river stones until the top rock sits barely wet. Our moving water guide explains why sound and movement draw birds in the first place.

The Easy Mister is the cheapest way in. It screws onto a garden hose and hangs from a branch, and a hose on a timer keeps it running while you are away.

The Wild Birds Unlimited unit costs about five times as much and switches between dripping and misting, which suits a yard that serves songbirds and hummingbirds from one bath.

A solar bubbler adds movement to a bath but not mist. Treat it as an add-on for songbirds, and see where solar fountains work before you rely on one in shade.

Where to put it

Cornell advises open ground between a bath and thick shrubbery so birds can see a prowling cat, plus nearby branches for preening. For hummingbirds, add a bare twig or a hanging swing within a few feet of the spray.

Place the mister so it wets a broad leaf as well as the air. Our guide to bird bath placement covers sun, shade and sightlines.

Keeping it clean

Cornell says to change bath water every day or two, because droppings and mosquito eggs build up. A mister has no standing water, which removes most of that chore. Check the nozzle for clogs and rinse any shallow dish every day or two.
