Hummingbird feeder with perch: ruby-throated hummingbird sitting on the red perch ring of a saucer feeder with its bill in a feeding port

A hummingbird feeder with a perch does not pull in more hummingbirds. It changes how long each bird stays and, if the perch is wide enough, which other species can use the feeder. The Cornell Lab’s feeding guide notes that feeders with large enough perches also draw orioles, Downy Woodpeckers and Cape May Warblers.

So the answer to “who shows up” is the same hummingbirds, sitting instead of hovering, plus the occasional larger guest.

What the research says about perching

Hummingbirds hover because many flowers give them nothing to stand on, not because they prefer it. In a 1985 study in The Auk, Richard Miller fitted feeders with a small wire perch and found that floral architecture, not energy cost, decided whether a bird hovered or perched.

They sit most of the day anyway. A 1986 paper in Nature put hummingbirds at roughly 20 percent of waking hours feeding and 75 percent perched, and tied the pattern to how fast the crop empties. A feeder perch moves some of that sitting to where you can watch it.

Even perch makers admit the gap. Pop’s Birding, which sells a perch feeder, writes that it has found no study showing a perched feeder attracts more birds than a perchless one.

Saucer designs from Aspects and Wild Birds Unlimited run a raised perch ring around ports set in the lid. Bottle designs from Perky-Pet and First Nature put a small perch at each port on the base. Window dots hold 1.25 oz and skip the perch entirely.

Bees, wasps and the perch question

A perch does not invite insects. Bees and wasps go to the port itself, and port design is what stops them. Cornell’s guide says plastic saucer feeders with ports in the top are fairly bee and wasp proof, and the center moat keeps ants off once you fill it with tap water.

That is why the saucer feeders above pair a perch with top ports: the bird sits and reaches down, the insect cannot. Bottle feeders rely on bee guards at each flower instead.

Who else lands when the perch is wide

Orioles are the usual extra, and Cornell lists them first among the species that use hummingbird feeders with big perches. Whether you want them decides the design. A wide saucer ring welcomes them. A bottle feeder with four small port perches gives them far less to stand on.

Perches are also a wear point. Flower ports crack from UV and perches snap at the weld during cleaning, which is why they sit second in our rundown of hummingbird feeder parts that wear out first. A heavy glass bottle adds its own strain on hooks, covered in glass vs plastic hummingbird feeders.

Which design to buy

Choose a perch feeder if you want longer views, orioles are welcome, and you will clean it weekly. Choose a perchless window dot or a bottle with small port perches if you want hummingbirds only.

Placement still outranks the perch. Project FeederWatch says hummingbirds prefer feeders near trees and shrubs where they can rest and watch between visits. Our best hummingbird feeders roundup ranks the saucer and bottle designs above on cleaning and leaks.
