How many hummingbird feeders: two nectar feeders hung apart in a backyard with a hummingbird hovering

Two feeders is the practical minimum, and three or four is better once you regularly see more than one bird. The count matters less than the placement: feeders need to sit out of sight of each other, because a dominant male will guard every port he can see from his perch.

One feeder in an open yard does not feed the hummingbirds in your neighbourhood. It feeds one of them, while the rest get chased off.

One Feeder Feeds One Bully

Ruby-throated males defend a feeding territory aggressively, and a single feeder makes that easy work. He picks a perch with a clear view and drives off anything that approaches.

You still see plenty of activity, which is why the problem goes unnoticed. What you are watching is one resident and a stream of failed visits.

Two Is the Minimum, Four Is Better

Splitting the same volume of nectar across two feeders on opposite sides of the house raises the number of birds that get to drink. A guard cannot watch both.

Three or four spread around the yard works better again during peak season. Smaller feeders emptied often beat one large feeder sitting half full and fermenting.

Spacing Beats Quantity

Aim for at least 15 to 20 feet between feeders, with a fence, house corner, or shrub breaking the line of sight. Two feeders hanging off the same bracket count as one.

Give each spot a nearby perch, a twig or wire within a few feet, since hummingbirds spend most of the day sitting rather than hovering. Feeder design matters here too, and our best hummingbird feeders picks note which models include perches.

Late Summer Changes the Math

Numbers climb through August and early September as juveniles fledge and migrants pass through. Territorial behaviour breaks down when a dozen birds arrive at once, and that is when extra feeders pay off most.

Scale up before the rush rather than during it. Birds need a few days to find a new station.

Every Extra Feeder Is Another Cleaning Job

Nectar spoils in about two days in hot weather, faster in direct sun, and mould in a feeder is a genuine hazard to the birds. Four feeders means four cleanings on the same schedule.

Keep it manageable with small feeders you can empty and refill quickly, and follow the routine in our guide to how to clean a hummingbird feeder. Mixing fresh sugar water takes a minute once you have the hummingbird nectar recipe memorised.
