Break the trail
Ants lay pheromone trails. Once one scout finds the feeder, the rest follow the same chemical line straight to it.
Wipe the hanger, hook, pole, and any branch the trail runs along with soapy water. That erases the path and buys you a genuine reset rather than a pause.
If the feeder hangs from a branch touching the house or a fence, ants have a second route that bypasses the moat entirely. Move it to a free hanging spot.
Keep the outside clean

What to avoid entirely
- Petroleum jelly, cooking oil, or grease on the hanger
- Ant bait stations placed directly under the feeder
- Insecticide sprayed on or near the pole
- Sticky tape wraps, which trap small birds and bats
